When copying images the most important thing to remember is that just because something is available for free, this doesn't mean that you can use the image for free.
You can copy images from publications included in the CLA Education Licence – just check that the material is included by using our Check Permissions tool. The Licence covers you to distribute these copies within your institution. |

For images, as with most copyrighted material, just because something is free to view doesn’t mean it’s free to use, so it’s important to check the copyright conditions. |
Search engines such as Google or Bing are not websites in themselves – they are pulling images from elsewhere on the internet and it is important that you check the T&Cs of the site directly hosting the images. |
‘Copyright free’ images from sites such as freeimages.co.uk are completely free to download and use, provided that certain basic terms are adhered to, such as acknowledging the source and not reselling or redistributing it. |
‘Stock’ or ‘royalty free’ images from such sites as Getty Images, Shuttershock and many others, are sold for a one-time fee permitting you to use them as many times as you wish with no repeat royalties to pay. |
‘Rights managed’ images are where the user pays a fee and the images can be used under licence. The use might be limited in some way – for instance that single use only is permitted. |
For more information on using images, The British Institute of Professional Photography has put together a helpful Guide to Using Images
