Currently, a Higher Education Institution (HEI) with a CLA Higher Education Licence can copy a limited extract from a published work – the ‘first extract’ – e.g. a single chapter from a book or 10%.
With the Second Extract Permissions Service, we offer HEIs the option to buy permission to copy and use an additional amount – a ‘second extract’ – e.g. another chapter from the book or another 10%.
Our solution takes away the pains of negotiating with costly third-party agents or dealing with the publisher directly, which can be a time-consuming process with uncertain results.
We’ve worked with copyright owners to be able to offer this streamlined service, helping HEIs to use additional content as and when they need it. The service is available for publications from participating publishers.
How does it work?
- Any licensed HEI can register and set up an account, entirely free of charge. Once your account is set up, you can start buying permissions to copy Second Extracts via the Check Permissions tool on the CLA website from participating publishers.
- Second Extract Permissions are priced per page, per student by each publisher, and a flat service fee of £4 is applied for each transaction. You can check the price before confirming the order and there is no obligation to use the service once it has been set up.
- You can use extracts that you have purchased under the service for the whole academic year, including resits. Please note that you have to purchase the extract again if you want to use it again in the following academic year.
- Requests are made via the Check Permissions tool. Here you can identify whether a publication is eligible for the Service. Please make sure to select the Higher Education Licence sector when using the Check Permissions tool as the service is not available for other CLA Licences
- Invoices are issued on a monthly basis for any transactions that have been made in the previous month
How do I get started?
