Our Check Permissions search tool lets you see what you can copy, share or re-use legally with a CLA licence.
This search facility accesses our comprehensive database of over 17 million publications to show what is covered under each type of CLA licence as well as NLA media access education licences.
Start your search here:
1. Begin by entering a search term, or a number of terms, into the search box above. You can choose to enter any of the following terms:
- an ISBN or ISSN identifier (recommended)
- The title of a publication
- a contributor (author) name
- a website URL
2. To ensure you get a result that is accurate for your Licence type, you have to select the correct Licence type from the drop down list. You need to select an option for the search to work. For illustrative purposes, we're using Higher Education.
3. You can filter to refine your search by using the 'Publication type', 'Publisher and 'Country of Publication' to narrow down the results.
Note: The Check Permissions tool gives access to a CLA database that helps determine copying permissions; it is not a bibliographic catalogue as such and doesn't list imprints. A search by ISBN will give you the most accurate results.
4. When you have identified the edition that you wish to copy from, select Show Permissions. The results will depend on your chosen Licence sector and may vary, depending on the Licence you have.
You can then view the permissions for different types of copying. Select the drop-down menu for further information on how you may share these copies.
Note: The Second Extract Permissions Service shown in the example below is an extension to the CLA Higher Education Licence and only available to CLA Higher Education Licensees. A sperate application is required.
Please note:
- The organisation has to own the source copy that you want to copy from
- Permissions are linked to the ISBN/ISSN not the title
If you are having difficulty using the Check Permissions tool, can’t find the title you are looking for or believe the results returned are incorrect, please do not hesitate to contact us at permissions@cla.co.uk and we will be happy to help.
This text is intended for use as guidance only and not as a substitute for the CLA Licence terms themselves, which should be read in full. In the event of conflict between the two, the Licence shall prevail. For permissions not listed above, please contact the publisher direct.
