Copying permissions under the CLA Licences depend on the country of publication and the format the publication has been published in. The Licence includes many overseas publications. You can use Check Permissions to find out whether or not an overseas publication is covered by the Licence.
International repertoire exchange agreements with other countries permit UK licensees to copy from foreign magazines, books, journals and digital publications.
Where it is covered, it will be due to at least one of the following arrangements.
• We have a reciprocal agreement with an organisation similar to CLA overseas.
• We have an international mandate direct from the relevant publisher. (In these cases, Check Permissions shows the title as being published in the UK, which is linked to royalty payment arrangements.)
These agreements permit CLA licensees to photocopy titles published in the respective territories. Several of these territories also extend rights for scanning and for the reuse of digital publications, including some websites, depending on the type of licence you hold.
- Please use the table outlining CLA’s international territory agreements to check what type of copying is included for each territory.
- Please follow the links for each country to see any specific inclusions or exclusions. Not all relevant information is visible from the preview table.
- If you want to copy from an edition that is published by a US-based publisher, please refer to the Knowledgebase article on this subject.
- The easiest way to check if a publications can be copied under your CLA Licence is to use our Check Permissions tool.
- Permissions are linked to the ISBN/ISSN, not the title.
If you are not sure where the publisher is based you might find the following points helpful:
- Copying permissions under the CLA Licence depend on where the publisher’s head-office is based.
- You can usually find the publisher’s details on the title page of the book.
- If you have access to the Nielsen catalogue or WorldCat, you can usually find details on the country of publication here.
- For large multi-national publishers, it can be difficult to work out where the head-office is based as they often have offices all over the world. When in doubt, please get in touch with us and we can have a look for you.
- If you need help, please send an email to permissions@cla.co.uk
If you are having difficulty using the Check Permissions tool, can’t find the title you are looking for or believe the results returned to be incorrect, please do not hesitate to contact us at permissions@cla.co.uk or support.education@cla.co.uk and we will be happy to help.
This text is intended for use as guidance only and not as a substitute for the CLA Licence terms themselves, which should be read in full. In the event of conflict between the two, the Licence shall prevail. For permissions not listed above, please contact the publisher direct.
